Mark 10:35-45 (shorter form Mark 10:42-45)
Jesus teaches that those who wish to be great must be the servant of all.
Background on the Gospel Reading
In this Sunday’s Gospel, we continue to read from the section of Mark’s Gospel that reports Jesus’ journey to Jerusalem. Last Sunday, we heard Jesus lament the particular challenges that those with many possessions face in order to enter the Kingdom of God. Jesus then predicts his passion to the Twelve, who are amazed and afraid. In this part of Mark’s Gospel, Jesus’ words to his closest disciples seem to be intended to prepare them for the events that will occur in Jerusalem.
In today’s Gospel, James and John ask to be given seats of honour when Jesus enters into his glory. Once again, the disciples seem to be selective in what they hear Jesus say. They want to share Jesus’ glory but do not appear to understand that his glory will be preceded by his suffering. Jesus notes their lack of understanding and predicts the suffering they will endure for the sake of the Gospel. Jesus says that the honour they seek is not his to give. When the other ten hear what James and John have asked, Mark reports that they are indignant. Jesus takes the opportunity to teach them.
Jesus explains the importance of service and sacrifice in the life of a disciple. In particular, he seems to be preparing the Twelve for their leadership roles in the emerging Christian community. Echoing the Gospel we heard several weeks ago (on the 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Mark 9:33-37), Jesus acknowledges that his teaching is countercultural. In today’s Gospel, Jesus contrasts the dynamics within the community of disciples with those shown by the rulers of the Gentiles.
Following Jesus’ example of sacrificial love continues to be countercultural in our day as well. We might take this opportunity to consider our models of authority and examine our own exercise of authority. On whose example do we model our leadership?

Reflection on the Sunday Gospel – Gospel - Mark 10:17-30
A man with many possessions asks Jesus what he must do to gain eternal life.
Sunday’s Gospel might make us uncomfortable about our possessions. This discomfort offers us an opportunity to consider our possessions and our family’s commitment to the poor. Material possessions are a necessity in our culture. Our use of these possessions and our attitude about their importance is our choice, however. It is a choice we can make with the awareness that our faith in Jesus commits us to show our care for the poor.
As you gather as a family, consider together these questions: Would it be possible to inventory our possessions? Are there things in our house that we no longer need or use? What might we do with these things? Read together Sunday’s Gospel, Mark 10:17-30. Talk about the warning about material possessions that Jesus gives in this Gospel. How does this make you feel? Choose an action that helps your family show its commitment to the poor.

Stella Maris Mercy Feast Celebrations
During week 10, the entire school had the privilege of hosting Sr. Margaret, a current Sister of Mercy, for two days. The students engaged with her to learn about the rich history of the Sisters of Mercy and how they can embody the Mercy Charism in their daily lives. This interaction provided a valuable opportunity for the children to connect with their school's mission and the foundational principles of the Sisters of Mercy.
In addition to her time with the students, Sr. Margaret also met with the staff, offering guidance and inspiration to ensure that the vision of Catherine McAuley, the founder of the Sisters of Mercy, is continued to be actively upheld within the school community. Her teachings served to reinforce the importance of living out the values of compassion and service that define the Sisters' legacy.
The celebration culminated in a Mass attended by the school community, led by Fr. John and Sr. Margaret, honouring the order's founding principles. A significant highlight was the growth of the Mercy tree, which symbolizes the kindness and compassion exhibited by students and staff alike. Congratulations were extended to everyone for their efforts in making a positive impact, reflecting the teachings of Jesus and the Sisters of Mercy.
2025 Classroom Placements
When we determine the students’ class groupings each year, we consider many factors. If parents have specific requests they wish to be considered, please address them in writing to Ms Christina Hynes and leave them at the office by Wednesday, 30th October 2024. There will be no considerations after this date. The request should be clearly stated with a reason for making that request. As you would appreciate, it is a difficult task and impossible to keep everyone happy.
We ask you to remember three things:
- Children adapt more easily than parents
- We consider all factors thoroughly
- In the end, the leadership team make the final decision.
If you are considering relocating or will not be attending Stella Maris in 2025, please inform the school office as soon as possible, as per the Terms and Conditions on your child’s signed Enrolment Acceptance.

Booklist Update for 2025
The school is in the process of arranging booklist orders for 2025. As communicated at the end of last year, we have conducted a thorough review and audit of booklist items. Our focus has been to minimise overordering, build consistency in approaches across the Early Years and Grades 3-6, and ensure materials reflect recent changes in teaching practice (e.g., use of mini-whiteboards).
Some book lists have been reduced in cost by two-thirds, which parents will welcome. Where practicable, we will ensure that the surplus from this year is passed up to the following grade level to minimise wastage.
Thank you for your patience and understanding in this matter.

Deputy Principal

Grade 6 Cinema Excursion
Adventure at the Cinema!
Last term, in Week 9, the Grade 6 students embarked on an exciting excursion to the Burnie Metro Cinemas. Their mission? To watch the highly anticipated animated film "The Wild Robot"!
This adventure tied directly into the Literature strand of the Australian Curriculum. Students got to put on their detective hats and analyse, interpret, and evaluate both the printed book and the digital film version of the same captivating story.
The students were buzzing with anticipation as they settled into the plush theatre seats. When the opening credits rolled, their eyes grew wide with wonder. They were transported into the whimsical world of the robot protagonist as it navigated the challenges of nature.
At the conclusion of the film, the Grade 6 learners jotted down their observations, questions, and comparisons between the book and the movie. Afterwards, they engaged in lively discussions, sharing their unique perspectives and insights.
This hands-on learning experience allowed the students to truly immerse themselves in the narrative. They didn't just read the words on a page - they saw the characters come to life on the big screen! This multi-sensory approach helped cement their understanding and appreciation of the story.
The trip to the cinema was a hit with the Grade 6 class. They left the theatre feeling inspired, engaged, and eager to explore more stories through both traditional and digital mediums. This dynamic learning adventure was the perfect way to bring the Literature curriculum to life!
Grade 6 Camp
In week 10 last term, the Grade Six went to Camp Banksia for a two-night stay. On the way there, we stopped for a game of ten-pin bowling, and a few students, including Mrs. Wickham and Ms. Wilkin, managed to get strikes. After that, we visited Tasmazia, and everyone successfully navigated the mazes without getting lost.
The next day was spent enjoying the amazing facilities at Camp Banksia, including the fantastic playground. On the way home, we stopped at the Devonport pool for a swim, and some students even fell asleep on the bus.
The camp was a fantastic experience, and we would like to thank the parents who came to help: Tori, Pete, Ross, Eve, Mel, Robbie, and Karen. We also want to express our gratitude to Ms. Hynes, Mr. McCulloch, and Mrs. Sayer for joining us for the entire trip. A special big thank you goes to Mrs. Wickham and Ms. Wilkin for all their hard work in organising this memorable camp.
Grade 2 Travel Expo
Last term, our Grade 2 students showcased their incredible research projects on countries from around the world in a Travel Expo! Each student selected a country to explore, and their hard work was on full display for the entire school to see. Teachers and students were amazed by the creativity, detail, and enthusiasm in every presentation. A huge congratulations to our young researchers!
One Day School
One Day School (ODS) Online Meet and Greet Day – A Powerful Experience for Our Students
On Friday, 20 September, students from various schools gathered at St. Brendan Shaw College in Devonport for the Northern One Day School (ODS) Online Meet and Greet Day. This event offered a wonderful opportunity for students to come together in person, engaging in a day of collaborative activities focused on raising awareness about global issues, including the challenges faced by refugees.
Throughout the day, students participated in meaningful experiences that encouraged deep reflection and discussion about these important issues. The event helped foster a sense of empathy and critical thinking, allowing students to explore how they can contribute to making a positive difference in their communities and beyond.
We are so proud of our students and congratulate them on their ability to engage thoughtfully with complex issues, demonstrating maturity and empathy throughout the day.
The Northern ODS Online Meet and Greet Day was a memorable and impactful occasion, offering students a chance to grow intellectually while building connections that will enhance their learning moving forward.
